From 16th – 22nd July 2018, I had the honour, along with six other Australians, of participating in a tour organised by the Taiwan Affair Office of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. The aim of this tour was to foster a better understanding of Shanghai’s rapid advancement and economic growth. In our six day tour, we experienced various cultural and business sites, tasted Shanghai’s local delicacies, and created lifetime bonds with New Zealanders and Shanghainese university students.
The place that resonated most with me was the Shanghai Data Exchange Corporation, whom are responsible for managing big data projects. One example of this is their use of mobile cellular data to capture each mobile phone’s signal, and subsequently track traffic congestion for the government to better manage and create alternative traffic routes where applicable. I was especially intrigued by the fact that they were able to track every mobile phone that was entering Disneyland Shanghai and determine whether they are from overseas, along with the most popular travel routes. The utilisation of this information allows companies to better target tourists and better accommodate for their needs.
I strongly believe that Shanghai is one of the world’s most advanced cities and is expected to continue to prosper perpetually. During our tour, I was able to have a taste of old Shanghai and experience the bustling lifestyle of the current Shanghai. As a result of their competitive mindset, companies and citizens of Shanghai alike strive to work together for greater economic development and create more opportunities for everyone. I would like to thank the Taiwan Affair Office of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government for organising and funding our tour. I would also like to thank Principal Hung Banh for recommending me for this tour, which gave me a unique experience of the most cosmopolitan city of China.
